Face material

The fiber sheet over a padel racket's core: fiberglass flexes and forgives, carbon stiffens the response and outlasts it. Price follows the fiber.
The face is the fiber-and-resin sheet laminated over the core on both sides of the racket, the surface the ball actually meets. Two materials cover the market, fiberglass and carbon fiber, and the choice between them is a stiffness choice that echoes through feel, power delivery, durability, and price.
Fiberglass
Fiberglass is the flexible option. The face gives on impact and snaps back, adding a small catapult to slow balls and rounding off the shock of fast ones. Off-center hits lose less, because the flex spreads the work across more of the face. It is also the cheap fiber, which is why fiberglass dominates the entry-level shelf. The limits show at speed: under a hard swing a fiberglass face washes out some of the energy a stiffer sheet would return, and repeated heavy use softens it over seasons.
Carbon
Carbon fiber is stiffer and stronger for its weight. A carbon face flexes little, so a fast swing's energy arrives in the ball rather than in the sheet, and the feedback into your hand is immediate and precise. It shrugs off the scrapes and knocks that gradually kill softer faces. The price is literal and physical: carbon rackets cost more, and the stiffness passes more vibration to the arm, especially over a hard core. Layups are labeled 3K, 12K, or 18K for the filament count per woven strand. The weave changes feel at the margin. The fiberglass-versus-carbon decision is the one that matters.
Choosing a face
- Fiberglass: beginners, budget buys, comfort seekers. Flex, forgiveness, and a friendly price.
- Carbon-fiberglass hybrid: the intermediate middle. Carbon's snap tempered by glass, at a mid price.
- Full carbon: trained swings and attacking games. Direct energy transfer, long life, top price.
The face sets stiffness, the core behind it sets the spring, and the two only make sense together. A carbon face over soft EVA plays gentler than the carbon label suggests; fiberglass over hard EVA plays firmer. Then shape and balance decide where all that response is aimed.
