Camber profile
Also called camber, rocker profile, camber/rocker
The bend built into a board or ski base along its length. It sets edge grip, float, and pop before any other spec has a say.
Camber profile is the shape of the base when the board or ski sits unweighted on a flat floor. It is the first thing your weight interacts with when you stand on it, so it decides how the board grips, floats, and springs before flex, shape, or width get involved.
The three profiles
Camber is the classic arch: the middle lifts off the snow and the contact points sit near the tip and tail. Weight it and the base flattens, pressing the whole edge into the snow under tension. That tension is what gives a cambered board its grip on hard snow and its pop out of a turn or off a lip.
Rocker (also called reverse camber) is the opposite: the center touches the snow and the tip and tail lift away, like a rowing boat's hull. It floats in soft snow, pivots easily, and is hard to catch an edge on, which is why beginner and powder boards use it. The trade is edge hold. On ice a fully rockered board feels loose and washes out.
Hybrid profiles mix the two along the length: camber underfoot or between the feet for grip and drive, rocker at the tip (and often the tail) for float and forgiveness. Most all-mountain boards are hybrids because that combination is what lets one board hold an edge on a groomer and still stay afloat when it snows.
Why it matters when you buy
Two boards with the same length and flex ride completely differently if their profiles differ. Read the profile first, then let flex and shape refine it:
- Mostly hard resort snow: more camber, for grip and energy.
- Regular fresh snow: more rocker up front, for float and an easier nose.
- One board for everything: a hybrid, camber underfoot with a rockered tip.
Profile pairs tightly with flex and shape. A soft rockered twin is a park and powder toy; a stiff cambered directional is a charger. Same two axes, opposite boards.
