Mondopoint

Mondopoint is the sizing system used for ski boots and, less visibly, snowboard boots: the length of your foot in centimeters. A 27.5 boot fits a 27.5 cm foot. That is the whole system, and its bluntness is exactly why it works.

Why it beats US and EU sizing

US and EU shoe sizes are conventions, not measurements. A US 10 from one brand is a different last, a different length, and sometimes a different label than a US 10 from another, and the printed conversions between systems drift by up to a full size. Mondopoint removes the translation step: it states the foot length the boot was built for, in a unit you can check with a ruler. It comes from the international shoe-sizing standard ISO 9407, and the wintersports industry adopted it because boot shells and binding settings needed a number that meant the same thing everywhere.

Measuring your foot

1. Stand on a sheet of paper against a wall, heel touching the wall, wearing the sock you ride in.
2. Mark the tip of your longest toe. Do both feet; they differ.
3. Measure wall to mark in centimeters. The larger foot is your Mondopoint size.

For a performance fit, most fitters put you at or a half size below your measured length, because liners pack out over the first weeks. Sizing up for day-one comfort is the classic mistake: the boot you can wiggle your toes in at the shop is the boot your heel lifts in by February. Width matters too. The last width, quoted in millimeters at the forefoot (98 mm narrow to 104 mm wide in ski boots), is the second number to check once the length is right.

Where it touches the rest of your setup

On a snowboard your Mondopoint size, not your sneaker size, is what the maker's boot-range chart for each board width actually refers to. Two boots labeled US 10.5 can differ by half a centimeter of foot; the Mondo number is printed inside most liners and cuts through it. Get the measurement once and carry it into the waist width decision, where it determines whether you need a standard or wide board.
