Spinning rods

Spinning rods cover a wider range of lure weights and techniques than any other rod class, which is why they are the default first rod and usually the last one anglers give up. The reel hangs beneath the blank and the line leaves a fixed spool, so casting light lures is easy in a way baitcasting gear never quite matches. Power is the first spec to read: ultralight and light rods load with a few grams of lure and protect fine tippets, medium is the everyday predator range, and medium-heavy upward is for pulling fish out of cover or throwing big baits. Action tells you where the blank bends, fast and extra-fast rods flex near the tip for quick hooksets and precise lure control, moderate actions bend deeper and cushion headshakes when a fish runs at the boat. Match the lure weight rating to what you actually throw rather than the heaviest number printed on the blank, since a rod loaded far under its rating casts poorly.
