Base material

Also called P-Tex, sintered base, extruded base

The polyethylene running surface of a board or ski, made two ways: extruded (cheap, low-care) or sintered (fast, wax-hungry).

The base is the polyethylene sheet you slide on, generically called P-Tex after the original trade name. Every base is high molecular weight polyethylene; what separates a rental beater from a race board is how that plastic is made into a sheet. There are two processes, and they behave differently for as long as you own the board.

Extruded

An extruded base is melted polyethylene pushed through a die into a sheet. The result is a dense, closed surface. It is cheaper to make, easy to repair with a drip candle, and it keeps most of its glide even when you never wax it, which is exactly how most owners treat it. The cost is a ceiling: it cannot absorb much wax, so it will never be truly fast, and it feels draggy on flat traverses and wet spring snow.

Sintered

A sintered base starts as polyethylene powder pressed and heated below its melting point, then sliced into sheets. That leaves a microporous structure that soaks up wax and holds it, so a freshly waxed sintered base is noticeably faster, especially in wet or dirty snow. Grades run from around 2000 up to 7000 and beyond; higher numbers mean higher molecular weight, more wax absorption, and better abrasion resistance. Some race bases add graphite for static reduction and dirty-snow speed.

The catch is maintenance. A sintered base that never sees wax dries out, turns chalky white along the edges, and ends up slower than a cheap extruded base. It is also harder and more expensive to repair when you find a rock. Sintered is a commitment, not an upgrade badge.

Which one you want

  • You wax a few times a season or never: extruded. It will quietly outperform a neglected sintered base.
  • You wax regularly and care about glide: sintered, the higher grade the better.
  • Rocky early-season laps, rails, cat tracks: extruded repairs cheaper and shrugs off more abuse.

Base material never changes how a board turns; profile and flex own that. It changes how fast the board runs and how much work it asks of you between runs. Buy it to match your maintenance habits, not the marketing tier.
