How to choose snow goggles

Goggles are an optics purchase wearing a fashion accessory's clothes. The frame gets the marketing photos, but the lens does the work, and the lens spec that matters is one number: VLT, visible light transmission, the percentage of light the lens lets through. Get the VLT right for your conditions, get the fit right for your face and helmet, and everything else is preference.

VLT: match the lens to the light

A dark lens on a bluebird day and a dark lens in a storm are two different experiences, and only one of them is safe. Low VLT blocks light; high VLT lets it through. The bands:

  • 5 to 20% VLT: full sun, high altitude, spring glare. Usually mirrored or heavily tinted.
  • 20 to 40% VLT: mixed sun and cloud, the everyday resort band.
  • 40 to 70% VLT: storm days and flat light. Rose, yellow, and amber tints that pull contrast out of grey snow.
  • 70%+ VLT: night riding and whiteout. Clear or near-clear.

Here is the buying consequence. One dark lens covers the sunny days and abandons you at 3 pm under cloud, when the light goes flat and the bumps disappear. A mid-range goggle with a bright-light lens and a spare low-light lens beats an expensive goggle with one dark lens, every time. Most current frames make the swap quick, magnets or a simple latch, so carrying the spare in a jacket pocket is no burden. Photochromic lenses that shift VLT with UV are the one-lens answer, at a price, and they react slower than a lens change when the weather moves fast.

Lens shape: cylindrical, spherical, toric

A cylindrical lens curves across your face but stays flat vertically. It is the cheapest to make, and the flat profile brings some glare and a little distortion at the edges of your vision. A spherical lens curves on both axes, like a section of a ball: wider field of view, less edge distortion, and more air between lens and face, which helps against fog. Toric lenses curve on both axes but less vertically, splitting the difference in look and price. The optical gap between a good cylindrical and a spherical lens is smaller than the price gap suggests. Spend on VLT options and a quality dual-pane lens before you spend on shape.

Fit, helmets, and the goggle gap

A goggle seals against your face with a foam gasket, and the seal is the fit. Press the goggle on without the strap: even contact all around, no pinch at the nose, no gap at the temples. Frames come in sizes, and low-bridge fits exist for flatter nose profiles, so there is no reason to tolerate a leak. Then test with your helmet on, because the two are a system. The goggle's top edge should meet the helmet rim with no exposed strip of forehead. That strip, the goggle gap, is a cold problem and a sunburn problem. If your helmet pushes the goggle down your nose or leaves a gap, one of the two is the wrong shape, and it is usually cheaper to swap the goggle. Wear glasses? OTG (over-the-glasses) frames are built with the depth and foam channels for it, and they work; ask for them by name.

Fog is a venting problem

Fog is warm damp air from your face condensing on a cold lens. Every part of the defense is about managing that. A dual-pane lens with an anti-fog inner coating does most of the work, and the foam vents along the frame's top and bottom do the rest, so do not buy any goggle without both. The rest is habit: keep the inner lens dry and never wipe it (blot it, the coating scratches off), do not park the goggle on your forehead where your head heat steams it, and on the skin track carry it, wear it on the helmet, anywhere but your face. A fogged lens on a cold chairlift can stay fogged for the rest of the day.

Buy for the worst light you ride in, not the best. Sunny days forgive any lens. Flat light forgives nothing.
