Goggle VLT

Visible Light Transmission: the percentage of light a goggle lens lets through. Low VLT for sun, high VLT for storms and flat light.
VLT is the share of visible light that makes it through the lens to your eye, given as a percentage. A 10% VLT lens is a dark sunglass for glacier glare. An 80% VLT lens is nearly clear, built for night riding and storms. It is the one goggle spec that maps directly to conditions, and it matters more than the lens color it usually hides behind.
Reading the number
- 5-20% VLT: bright bluebird days, high altitude, spring glare. Usually mirrored, often a dark gray or brown tint.
- 20-40% VLT: sunny to partly cloudy. The most useful single lens if you only own one.
- 40-60% VLT: overcast, light snowfall. Rose, amber, and yellow tints live here and boost contrast.
- 60%+ VLT: heavy snow, fog, dusk, night. Clear or barely tinted.
European standard EN 174 groups the same idea into lens categories S0 through S4, S0 being nearly clear and S4 the darkest. If a European-market lens lists a category instead of a percentage, that is what you are reading.
Why flat light is the real test
Sunny days are easy: almost any dark lens works. The day that punishes a wrong lens is the gray one, when the light is flat and the snow surface disappears. You cannot see the bump until you hit it. A high-VLT, contrast-boosting tint (rose, yellow, or a branded contrast lens) recovers surface definition by filtering the blue wavelengths that flatten it. This is where a cheap dark lens fails you, and it is the strongest argument for owning a second lens.
How to choose
Match VLT to where you actually ride. Coastal or northern resorts with frequent storms: prioritize the 40%+ lens and treat the dark one as the spare. High-altitude, sunny climates: the reverse. Goggles with quick-change magnetic or lever systems make carrying both realistic, and photochromic lenses that shift VLT with the light (typically across a 15 to 60% range) cover the middle for one-lens riders. Skip the aesthetics until the VLT is right; mirror coatings change the look far more than the vision.
